Cataract Surgery By a Skilled Kansas City Cataract Surgeon

Cataract Surgery By a Skilled Kansas City Cataract Surgeon

Cataracts are notorious for causing blindness as people get older. It is not a question of if you will get a cataract, but when.  If you live long enough, eventually you will get a cataract.

Fortunately, cataracts do not usually begin to form until you are in your 70’s, although in rare cases people in their 40’s can get a cataract.

More than half of all Americans age 80 and older either have had cataracts or have had Cataract Surgery to get rid of cataracts.

Today's laser surgery techniques have made the removal of cataracts easier, safer, and more comfortable than ever. Even so, you'll want the reassurance of knowing that you're receiving your surgical care from a skilled, reputable Kansas City eye doctor. Here at Trusted LASIK Surgeons, we can help you find the right surgery you need.

When Your Eye Doctor in Kansas City Recommends Cataract Surgery

Cataracts occur when the lenses in your eyes lose their transparency.

Proteins that normally don't interfere with the passage of incoming light gather together into solid masses that block some of that light from entering the eye. These milky-looking "filters" cause blurry vision or create radiant patterns around bright lights. They can also interfere with your color and contrast perception.

In worst-case scenarios, cataracts can completely fill the lenses, rendering you blind. Luckily, most cataracts take years or even decades to reach that stage. Your optometrist in Kansas City may have managed to optimize your vision through corrective lenses as the cataracts developed. At some point, however, you may be advised that you require surgery to remove the diseased lens entirely and have it replaced with an artificial intraocular lens (IOL).

What to Expect From a Cataract Surgery Procedure

Modern Cataract Surgery is performed as an outpatient procedure, with the actual operation taking only a few minutes per eye. After you have received sedation and a local aesthetic, a surgical laser makes a fine incision that allows your Kansas City eye doctor to gain access to the capsule of tissue that holds the lens in place. With the aid of an ultrasound device, the laser pulverizes the lens so that it can be removed easily. An artificial lens is then inserted into the lens capsule. In many cases, the incision can be expected to heal on its own, without stitches.

Laser-cataract surgery enjoys a high success rate. You'll notice a significant improvement in your vision with a day or so of having the procedure. You will then have a scheduled series of follow-up eye exams to check on your recovery. If a new cataract develops in your eye, an additional laser procedure called YAG capsulotomy can clear it up quickly and easily.

Laser-cataract surgery is not always used for removing a Cataract and costs more so cataract surgery is frequently done without the laser.  When a laser is not used in cataract surgery, the incision to remove the cataract lens is made with a blade.

Both laser-assisted and standard cataract surgery have very high success rates.

A cloudy capsule that can later at times develop inside the eye is not another cataract but a haze that develops in the membrane behind the lens implant and can be easily corrected by an surgeon in the office using a YAG laser.
