Eye care services are on the rise throughout the United States because of the digital age that constantly exposes individuals to harmful rays emitted from their smartphones and computers. LASIK surgery is an ideal choice for repairing sight negatively impacted by nearsightedness, farsightedness, astigmatism, and presbyopia. Our staff at Trusted LASIK Surgeons treats a variety of conditions with LASIK surgery.

What is LASIK?

LASIK is a surgical procedure that changes the shape of the patient’s cornea so that vision improves. The cornea is the clear covering that shields the front of your eye. Glasses become necessary when the clear covering given by nature is damaged to the degree of causing blurred vision. LASIK works to correct the cornea so that the patient has a reduced need for eyeglasses. In some cases, the need for eyeglasses becomes obsolete. Every case is, of course, different and requires an individual examination beforehand.

Conditions that may require LASIK

Nearsightedness, farsightedness, astigmatism, and presbyopia are the four conditions that may require a patient to undergo a LASIK procedure.

Nearsightedness, medically referenced as myopia, occurs when the patient can focus when objects are up-close. The vision becomes blurred, however, as the objects move outward. LASIK can assist so that the patient can view objects more clearly when they are far away.

It is not uncommon for patients suffering from myopia to also show signs of astigmatism. This condition occurs when the eye focuses on one point to the extent of blurred vision ensuing. There are essentially four types of astigmatism:

  • Corneal Astigmatism
  • Lenticular Astigmatism
  • Nearsighted Astigmatism
  • Farsighted Astigmatism

Those with nearsighted astigmatism have focal points in front of the retina. On the other hand, patients with farsighted astigmatism have focal points located behind the retina. It is not uncommon for patients to squint to see clearly when astigmatism is the culprit.

Farsightedness and presbyopia

Farsightedness, medically recognized as hyperopia, prevents patients from deciphering objects in close range. Seeing objects far off, on the other hand, is not as difficult. It is standard for individuals to pass through the farsightedness stage into the area of presbyopia. This condition has all the symptoms of farsightedness but comes with the evolutionary results of nearsightedness along with blurred vision in low light conditions.

Individuals over the age of 40 are more adept to presbyopia. Patients should make no mistake, though. All humans will develop presbyopia and eventually require eyeglasses or LASIK surgery.
