Everything You Need To Know Before Your LASIK Surgery

Have you been contemplating getting LASIK surgery because you're tired of wearing contacts or glasses every day? Find a trusted LASIK surgeon from our LASIK Surgeon Directory and speak with one about whether you qualify for this surgery. Here are a few things you should know before you decide.

What is LASIK?

LASIK (or Laser In-Situ Keratomileusis) is a laser vision correction surgery. LASIK works to correct vision impairments such as Astigmatism (blurring vision), nearsightedness (myopia), and farsightedness (hyperopia) by reshaping the cornea so that light focuses on the retina in the back of the eye. To reshape the cornea, an eye care specialist will use a laser to cut a flap of tissue from the front of the eye, uncovering the cornea. The doctor will then use a laser to reshape the cornea so that light centers around the retina. The procedure takes about 10 minutes for each eye.

Do You Qualify for the Surgery?

LASIK surgery is not for everyone. You should not have laser vision correction surgery if any of the following apply to you:

  • under 18 years old
  • pregnant or nursing
  • take certain drugs
  • your glasses prescription is not stable
  • the map of your cornea reveals ab abnormal shape
  • have eye conditions like glaucoma or dry eye
  • have other medical conditions like diabetes, lupus, or rheumatoid joint inflammation

Your refractive eye surgeon will be able to advise whether you are a good candidate for laser vision correction surgery. In general, you should qualify if you are over 18 years old, have had a glasses or a contact prescription that has been stable for at least two years, and have mostly healthy eyes.
