Jennifer Michelson, M.D. is a board-certified Ophthalmologist specializing in cataract and refractive surgeries. After graduating from Tufts University of Medicine, she completed her medical and surgical internship at Carney Hospital in Dorchester, Massachusetts followed by her Ophthalmology residency at Montefiore Medical Center and Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York City. During her time there, Dr. Michelson received the Ronald M Burde Award for Excellent in Resident Research as well as the Montefiore Student Teaching Award which was given to one resident out of three classes who demonstrates the best ability to teach medical students while rotating through the clinics. Dr. Michelson completed a one year refractive surgical fellowship under the guidance of Dr. Marc Michelson who is considered to be one of the pioneers in Laser Refractive Surgery.
In 2017 Dr. Jennifer Michelson joined Alabama Eye & Cataract Center, P.C. and Michelson Laser Vision, Inc. located in Birmingham Alabama. Both are boutique practices that specialize in providing unique and customized care to each patient while using cutting-edge technology to provide tailored outcomes for each patient. Dr. Jennifer Michelson specializes in All Laser (bladeless) Contoura Topoguided Custom LASIK and PRK, All Laser (bladeless) Wavefront Optimized LASIK and PRK, Intraocular lens implant surgery including Cataract Surgery and Refractive Lensectomy using mono-focal lenses, toric lenses, mutlifocal lenses, and extended range of focus lenses. In addition to publishing peer-reviewed scientific journal articles, Dr. Jennifer Michelson also has lectured on research topics at major eye meetings in the United States.
Dr. Michelson has coordinated and participated in the design, implementation, and analysis of several research studies evaluating light adjustable lenses, accommodating intraocular lenses, and new proprietary optical materials utilizing the rabbit model. In connection with this line of research Dr. Michelson assisted and performed pre-operative, surgical, and post-operative care of rabbits and enucleated and conducted histopathologic and gross specimen evaluations of rabbit eyes for IOL biocompatibility and toxicity.
Dr. Michelson has also been involved in research that evaluated explanted intraocular lenses which included studying the optical impact of glistenings, calcification, and PMMA degeneration on light transmittance and surface light scatterings of explanted intraocular lenses and assisting with ultrasound, Oculus Pentacam and OCT imaging of explanted lenses.
Dr. Jennifer Michelson is a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO), the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons (ASCRS), the Refractive Surgery Alliance Society, the Alabama Ophthalmology Association, and the American Medical Association (AMA).
In 2023, Dr. Jennifer Michelson joined an elite group of doctors on the ASCRS's Government Relations Committee to promote concerns of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons in a growing regulatory environment.
