Personal Bio
Dr. Peter Rapoza is an internationally recognized authority in refractive surgery, cataract surgery, and the medical and surgical treatment of the cornea and ocular surface. As a distinguished investigator, he has conducted pivotal studies on radial and astigmatic keratotomy, photorefractive keratectomy (PRK), LASIK, corneal transplantation, and cataract surgery. He has also participated in numerous clinical trials for ophthalmic pharmaceutical agents, advancing treatments for corneal transplant rejection, ocular inflammation following cataract surgery, dry eye, and ocular infections. His commitment to global healthcare is evident through his extensive teaching and medical care contributions in Africa, the Middle East, East Asia, and South America. Dr. Rapoza has also appeared on prominent television programs, including “Connie Chung’s Eye to Eye”, CNN, and Public Broadcasting.
Dr. Rapoza graduated with distinction from Northwestern University, where he was elected to the Phi Beta Kappa Honor Society. He received his medical degree with honors from the Pritzker School of Medicine at the University of Chicago, where he was elected to the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society. He completed his internship in internal medicine at the University of Chicago Hospitals and Clinics and his residency at the Wilmer Eye Institute at Johns Hopkins Hospital. Prior to his fellowship, Dr. Rapoza contributed to a landmark study on the causes of blindness in sub-Saharan Africa, uncovering critical insights into the transmission of trachoma, while working in Tanzania.
Dr. Rapoza was awarded a Heed Ophthalmic Foundation Fellowship to pursue his sub-specialty training in Cornea, External Disease, and Refractive Surgery at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He subsequently served as the Director of Cornea, External Disease, and Refractive Surgery at UWM for several years, pursuing a full-time academic career. Dr. Rapoza then moved to Boston, MA to become a partner at Cornea Consultants and a founding partner of the Laser Eye Center of Boston.
He served as an Assistant Professor of Ophthalmology (part-time) at Harvard Medical School and mentored cornea fellows at the Tufts University New England Eye Institute. A highly experienced refractive, corneal, and cataract surgeon, Dr. Rapoza has trained numerous fellows and physicians worldwide. He has authored numerous medical papers and book chapters, lectured internationally, and served as a consultant to the Ministry of Health of several nations. Dr. Rapoza is the recipient of an Honor Award from the American Academy of Ophthalmology for his scientific contributions and leadership in educational activities. He also served on the Preferred Practice Pattern® panel for Cornea and External Disease, establishing practice guidelines for his sub-specialties.
After an 18-year tenure at Ophthalmic Consultants of Boston, MA, Dr. Rapoza and his family, having developed a deep affinity for Burlington and the Green Mountain lifestyle, relocated part-time to Warren in Vermont. He has since joined Ophthalmic Consultants of Burlington, VT in South Burlington, Vermont, where he provides personalized care and utilizes the latest technology to achieve optimal patient outcomes for those seeking expert LASIK and cataract surgeons in Vermont and surrounding areas.
