Atlanta Cataract Surgeons

Eye health experts estimate that as many as 24 million people in the United States have cataracts.  This is a condition that causes a clouding of the lens of the eye, resulting in blurring, poor color perception and sensitivity to glare. The condition is often associated with aging, and in fact, about half of Americans over the age of 75 have some degree of cataract development. The recommended treatment for cataracts is surgery, which is generally a highly successful procedure that helps millions of people see more clearly each year. If you have been diagnosed with cataracts by your eye doctor, you should know the facts about cataract surgery that can help maintain good vision throughout your life.

Understanding Cataract Surgery

Your eye doctor will evaluate you to determine the extent of development of cataracts. Generally, your eye doctor will not recommend cataract surgery until cataracts have progressed to a point where they begin to impair normal vision. You may wait for years after your initial diagnosis before the surgery is ordered.  Cataract surgery is performed on an outpatient basis with a short recovery period. The cataract surgery involves removing the clouded lens of the eye and replacing it with an artificial lens.

The Cataract Surgery Procedure

Cataract surgeons generally use ultrasound or laser-assisted devices to remove the damaged lens. Before the procedure is done, the eye surface is numbed. You will not experience any discomfort during the procedure. After cataract surgery, you will be given drops to insert into the eyes for a few weeks. You will also have to wear a protective shield over the eyes while sleeping and protect your eyes from sunlight during the healing period. Expect to have someone drive you home after surgery, and you will have to avoid vigorous activity and exposure to dirt or grime for a period of time. If you need cataract removal in both eyes, your surgeon is likely to do the two surgeries a few weeks apart to allow you to have adequate vision in one eye before doing the other.
